Short Film by Violet Brew For her shot film, Violet asked me to design a poster using unit stills from the film shoot, and this included making a logo for the film title.
For the typefaace Violet wanted something raw and emotive, to fit the themes of the film. I concluded fairly early on in the process that either a handwriting font or actual hand lettering would be the way to go. After some experimentation with hand lettering and trying out different stock fonts, I came across P22 Freely, which wouldn’t be perfect but was a good starting point to make some tweaks.
I edited the proportions and thicknesses across all the letters, and made sure the two “A” characters looked slightly different as they would in real handwriting. Then, for the accompanying text I opted for Gill Sans, a font that has a recognised position in LGBTQ+ History as the typeface used in the iconic “Silence = Death” posters from the mid-80s.
This was the incorporated into the bottom of a few poster designs using photography from the film shoot, with the two shown below being the main poster (left) and an alternate poster (right).
