THE PHOTOGRAPHY ANNEX
Freelance Photography by Rachel Bellamy
Rachel approached me to design the brand identity for her new business as a Freelance Photographer. We hopped on a call to discuss what she was looking for in her branding, and one of the big points we both felt this branding needed was to avoid the cliches that lots of other photographers have in their logos, like shutter icons or crop marks.

The Photography Annex primarily works with family and pet portraits, so we needed a brand identity that feels friendly, safe, and comfortable. Some ideas we discussed were creating a symbol that hints at sunshine or flowers, without being a direct representation of these objects.

The final logomark we came to contains a subtle sunburst motif in the negative space, and the overall form, especially when paired with our vibrant coral colour, alludes to flower petals. I decided to pair this symbol with Fredoka, a rounded typeface that feels trustworthy, friendly, and professional. Fredoka is also a variable typeface, which means I was able to subtly tweak the weight (aka the boldness) depending on whether it is in black or white.

For body text, I decided on Nunito Sans Regular, a friendly and well balanced sans serif typeface. Both Fredoka and Nunito Sans are available for commercial use with a free licence, which was a great choice for The Photography Annex as it means there are no extra costs for this new business.

The colour palette went through a lot of changes over the course of developing this branding. Initially, I was looking at using a slightly tweaked primary colour palette, but found that there were contrast issues with yellow and pure red just didn’t feel quite right. So after some communication with Rachel on this, we found that a mostly monochrome palette with 3 shades of coral worked really nicely, and we kept a dark blue in to provide contrast, like for buttons on the website.
